Q. Why linux?

A. Well, why not? This is a hard one, there are many ponts for every side of the fence. I use linux because, I like it, plain and simple. There are lots of options and there are an infinite amount of things you can do with it and configurations. It does take a little bit to configure, but once you have it the way you like it, it's beautiful. Very stable, you don't have to reboot every day like Windows, and you don't have to reinstall evey few months either.

O. I made my choice to swith to linux, which distribution should I use?

A. Well there are a bunch, and most of it is preference. I use Librnet, which is based on Debian, and to tell you the truth there is not much of a difference. I like to use reiserfs, and Libranet supports it in the install. There are a few reasons like that why I chose Libranet over Debian. Debian has a great packaging system, makes my life so easy. On the downside, there is a bit more to configure then others like RedHat, Mandrake, and Suse. If you are a beginner switching to linux I would suggest one of those first. Another distribution I like a lot is Slackware. It is a bit old, but is very close to unix, which I like. Slackware has a different packaging system, I like it better then RPM. Slackware for me is a close second to Debian.

Q. Linux doesn't have the software like other platforms. How can I do what I need to?

A. Well, that is sort of true. But linux has some great software. I can go on and on, there a plenty of programs available, and many more in the works. The beauty of linux is the teamwork for the OS as well as the programs and documentation. Here are a few to get you started.

Email = Evolution which has everything, and also great to sync with your palm. Kmail is also good, just for email though.
Messaging = Gaim, I use this in Windows as well, it's great
Office Suite = OpenOffice.org is nice, sometimes a pain with doc files but its getting much better with every version. Version 1.1 now can save as pdf which is great. An alternative is Crossover Office, which in using wine allows you to run MS Office and some other Windows programs.
Graphics = The Gimp is very nice, almost as good as Photoshop.
Games = This one is a little tough. Some of the major games are linux native supported. Another option is WineX from Transgaming, it emulates DirectX apis and supports most games pretty well.
